many thoughts about how arthur felt like a person for once in his wretched little life holding his son for the first time, how that baby boy could have been so much better than him. so arthur half-abandoned him, never brought him back to the gang and didnt raise him as an outlaw. he left him with his mother and gave them money, visited them for christmas and their birthdays. and none of it mattered. he didn’t want his son to be a part of the outlaw life, so instead he was a victim of it. victim of the same senseless, random violence arthur doles out in the name of survival. how do you continue after that? how do you look the man who raised you in the eye and say, “yes I will kill these folk for no right reason” after your only son, the only good thing you’ve done in your life so far has died because of a bullet from a gun that looks like yours? how can he, as a man, as a human being, kill other people’s sons after his own is dead in the ground? unless he climbed into the grave next to his son and the boy’s mother. I guess he was right, he is more ghost than man.
